Defining home decor today no more identifies the living rooms and sofas... The definition percolates the drawing room right down to the kitchen, lobby and the powder toilet as its here that you spend more time

The most interesting thing about doing the interior of a place - from renovation to making something totally new, is innovation. To create something original from the exhaustive choices available in the market and to put a look together is the real challenge.
The home is the most sacred space under the sun and ’lifestyle’ being the new mantra for living, we are infact now open to spend big bucks, energy and oodles of style to make our cozy repose a reflection of who you are juxtaposition it with the practical nitty gritty one needs around.
Interestingly not only is art work for the walls or artifacts the obvious choice to make the home an arty place but every material you put and the way you put it could be a work of art depending on your imagination and choice. The powder toilet for example is probably one of the smallest rooms you have but the choice of colour schemes for the tiling of walls could be an art work.
You could start with using an enhancer or darker shade of green Spanish tiles on one wall and use a shade of rough Spanish creams on the other three while the counter and flooring could be dark green granite. The toilet and sink a pearly white from one of the Indian made Italian choices.
Once this basic work is taken care of, use a frameless glass half partition in the bathing area so as to create space. Now you could set about adding the finishing touches. Make the loo squeaky clean thereon on one cream wall add a lovely print of a Spanish courtyard in oranges and greens and see how it adds colour.
Next, instead of the regular dust bins pick up a wooden carved deep vase and use it as a dust bin while the soap dispenser could be something interesting made out of stone. Finally, use some tall dry stems in an orange colour and put it in a vase for which you have no use around the house while some orange and green hand towels could be put in a ceramic bowl.
Now look at the toilet you have created, you are sure to fall in love with it.
Similarly, the flooring you do in a particular room could be an art work, of course Italian floors is a big budgeted choice but even a kota stone if laid well with marble inlays and polished with a granite polish will look stunning. Similarly even mosaic floors if laid with the whitest Dehradun marble can look interesting.
Of course wooden floors are hot right now and everybody is trying at least one room with it. Again the rough Spanish tiles available in the market give a room a completely modern and well Spanish look.
You needn’t have a single artifact around the house but the way you put together your blinds, carpets, sofas and the rest of the furniture could well be an art work itself. Say a room fixed with Italian marble on the floor in the drawing room, you could have two beige smart looking sofa seating, a low coffee table, a low rack behind the sofa for books, while beautiful track lights in halogens could be on either side of the wall while both walls could have oil paintings in yellow and earth tones complementing the upholstery.
The kitchen again could have cabinetry which is stunning while a closet a set of wardrobes which are well planned for every little thing you own , a space allotted to even a sewing kit , a box allotted to your work out socks to the last safety pin you own.
The list can go on and on endlessly but one thing to keep in mind at all times is not to overdo it. Remember it’s your own home a place where you can put up your feet and relax at the end of the day not a museum or a palace for public eyes only. Use whatever you have, that’s the real spirit behind the he art of the home.
